Founded over 75 years ago, Swen Café has been a cornerstone of Kinistino, Saskatchewan, and continues to thrive under the ownership of Tom and Joanna La, who have proudly carried on its legacy for more than 35 years. This beloved restaurant has built a reputation across the province, becoming known far and wide for its blend of Chinese and Western cuisine. Interestingly, the café’s name, Swen, has a unique origin rooted in local history. It is said that the name was chosen as a playful response to a rivalry with a neighboring establishment. The original café, named "News Café," was located across the street. When some of the staff left, they opened a new restaurant directly opposite and named it Swen—"News" spelled backward—adding a bit of cheeky local lore to the café's identity. Today, Swen Café is known for its warm atmosphere, delicious food, and connection to the community. With its licensed dining area and the added appeal of VLTs, Swen Café continues to be a favorite gathering place for locals and visitors alike.
